15 STAGES OF MENTORING PROGRAM DESIGN

Mentoring program design

If you are planning to set up a mentoring program it is useful to have a checklist of what is involved. The Frontline Management Institute has worked with many organisations to design and deliver mentoring programs. From our experience successful mentoring program design involves some or all of the following 15 steps:

  1. Setting goals for the program
  2. Identifying key capability areas to be mentored
  3. Selecting mentors
  4. Selecting mentees
  5. Matching mentors and mentees
  6. Training and coaching mentors
  7. Briefing mentees
  8. Developing support mechanisms and tools for the mentoring
  9. Organising reporting and evaluation systems for the mentoring
  10. Carrying out reviews of mentoring progress
  11. Dealing with issues that may arise in the mentoring program
  12. Coordinating the mentoring
  13. Budgeting for costs for time, travel and resources to support the program
  14. Closing the mentoring relationship
  15. Closing and evaluating the mentoring program

This may seem complex but it is basically a step by step development system that you work through. It is far better to be prepared in advance by careful planning and preparation than to have to fire fight when things go wrong.

The Frontline Management Institute has a Centre for Mentoring and Coaching and can provide services to support mentoring if you need help or advice. We can consult, provide formats and tools for managing the mentoring program and provide training and coaching to support the program.
